If You Live in a City Big Enough to Need an Airport, Then Classpass is Worth It

I recently moved back to the Bay Area, and my sister, Bean, coerced me into getting ClassPass. I’ll answer all your burning questions about the app so you can make an informed decision.

How Much Does ClassPass Cost?:

It depends. My plan is $89 a month for 43 credits, but there are other plans, many of which are more expensive, which I’ve included below. A class can range anywhere from 1 to 10 credits. Beauty services and massages can easily be up to 45 credits.

Should I Just Do the Free Trial?:

The free trial gives you 20 credits that you can only use on a limited number of classes (and no fun beauty appointments). If you like variety and don’t want to commit, then the trial is worth it, but remember to cancel afterward.

I Have a Toxic Relationship with Exercise. Should I Get ClassPass?:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but exercise is very good for you. I know, I know. As much as I wish that weren’t the case, it’s true. If you have a bad relationship with exercise, getting a ClassPass membership will not magically repair that relationship. However, ClassPass gives you many options for different kinds of exercise, so you have a better chance of finding a form of movement that doesn’t make you wish for death.

Can I Only Use It for Workout Classes?:

No. You can use it for Open Gym Time, Massages, Manicures, Haircuts, etc. This all depends on where you live and what businesses work with ClassPass.

I was able to get my nails done at this random place in Portland! This is one example of the kinds of services you may be able to access. But remember to tip – that’s not included with the price.

Why Does That Matter?:

If you’re anything like me and think runner’s high is just a myth invented by athletic apparel companies to sell more shoes, then you hate working out. But you should still do it because our bodies love movement, and exercise can be a form of self-care. There will be days when I would rather eat glass than go to a yoga class. But on those days, it’s still important to perform other acts of self-care, and getting a pedicure or your eyebrows done can be a way to take care of yourself until you’re able to get back on your stationary bike.

I Live in Manzanita, Oregon. Should I Get ClassPass?:

Where even is that? It doesn’t matter – the answer is no. If you live in a small town or city, ClassPass may not be worth the expense because there are not enough businesses in that area to contract with ClassPass.

I live in Chicago. Should I Get ClassPass?:

Yes. That’s why this post is titled this way – if you live in a city large enough to necessitate an airport, you can choose from many classes and appointments.

Is ClassPass Available Where I Live?:

I do not know where you live. You should contact ClassPass or ask someone with the subscription to look up the location.

Can I Use ClassPass At My Favorite Gym and Cancel My Gym Membership?:

I do not know the politics of your favorite gym. If ClassPass is working with your gym, then the gym will get paid if you use your credits there. Every gym membership I’ve ever had has been a rip-off, so I will never object to anyone canceling a gym membership.

Can I Use ClassPass When I Travel?:

Yes. I traveled from the Bay Area to Portland for a wedding, and I was able to attend multiple classes and appointments! Bean and I went to a crunchy yoga class taught by a woman with beautiful blue hair, and I swear it was the highlight of my sister’s trip.

Do Manicures and Haircuts Really Only Cost 10 Credits?:

Of course not. Anything in the “self-care” or “beautification” category is more likely to cost 20-50 credits. These kinds of appointments vary and it’s up to you to decide if that’s worth it.

Can I Go to a Trampoline Park Through ClassPass?:

Not yet. This is an injustice, but if we work together, I hope one day we can bring about the change we want to see.

Do the Credits Rollover?:

I think they do! It says they do on the app. However, I have never seen this in action.

What’s the Catch?:

You need to bring your own equipment to some of these places, like your own yoga mat to a yoga studio or shoes to a cycling class. ClassPass also has a problematic canceling policy. You’ll be charged anywhere from $9-$12 for not attending an appointment. You need to cancel at least twelve hours in advance to avoid this fee. It makes sense why they do this- it’s an incentive for you to go to your class, and it also ensures that the studio or business is financially compensated for a potential missed appointment.

What Did You Do With ClassPass?:

I’ve done a lot! During my trial week, I went to a yoga class, a boxing class, a rowing class, and an open gym.

I found the trial week somewhat limiting and knew that the membership would grant me access to more services, making the $89 monthly fee worth it. I wanted to be able to return to the classes and gyms that I liked. Also, Bean likes having someone go to workout classes with her, and I hate to disappoint. Since then, I’ve been able to attend a wider range of classes and I’ve also had access to certain beautification services. Even on days when I can’t go to the gym, there’s still a lot of value in leaving the house to get a haircut. If you’re like me, and tend to rot, or have weird mental rules like “well I haven’t left my house yet and it’s already 3 pm so I can’t just leave now,” then getting ClassPass, and using it just for massages and haircuts, still has a ton of value.

  1. This is a great and very balanced review, Meows! Also I want to add that I’ve done some classes in Brazil using ClassPass which was really fun for me and a good way to meet locals. I’m glad you’re enjoying ClassPass so far and can’t wait to do another class with you! I’ll join you for a Rowing class next time.

  2. I would love this kind of thing if I lived in a big city and had any amount of spare money! But I don’t like that the beauty treatments use up so many credits. Why not standardize everything to take one credit? I’m sure Class Pass makes enough money on essentially a gym membership system to make up for inconsistencies in service prices.

  3. Unfortunately, I cannot afford the monthly membership, and I live in a small town but near a big city. I do not think it would be a good fit for me since I do not leave my apartment often LOL great Q&A!
