10 Shows and Movies You Can Watch If You’re As Sick as I Am

Well, folks, despite my best efforts, I finally have COVID. In a perfect world, all of my work would be complete, and I could spend the days making myself soup and watching TV. Unfortunately, this is a supremely imperfect world, so I must limit my TV watching. However, I can’t keep all five of my subscribers waiting for a sweet taste of weekly hagfish, so I banged out this post from my sickbed.

If you notice that some of these suggestions are repeats from other blog posts I’ve written, shut up, no, you don’t. I’m sick, and I have deadlines, so this is what you get.

One: Hilda (2018-2023), streaming on Netflix

I love this show until the end of time. My favorite episode is probably the one with the Thunderbird, although I do like whenever the Lindworm makes an appearance.

Two: Penelope (2006), streaming on Amazon Prime

My friends and I watched this last week, and it made for a charming, whimsical night. Christina Ricci stars as a young heiress cursed with a cute little pig nose, and James McAvoy as the guy who likes her, but isn’t quite who you think he is.

Three: Jim Henson’s The StoryTeller (1987-1989), streaming on Peacock

You know what sounds like an a bomb time? Shotgunning cold medicine and then watching “Hans My Hedgehog.” You’re welcome for the best night of your life.

Note: I’m not a doctor so do this at your own risk.

Four: Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989), streaming on Amazon Prime

It’s been years since I watched this movie, but I remember it being a fun adventure story. I also like that the titular character is portrayed in his jammies, which I am also currently wearing. #Twinsies

Five: Bob’s Burgers (2011- ongoing), streaming on Hulu

If you need suggestions for episodes, check out this list of my ten favorite episodes, although the movie is also a good time. I would not recommend eating while watching “Bob’s Burgers,” because one out of three episodes features something so childishly disgusting you’ll regret any food choices. So watch this show when you’re not in the mood to eat.

Six: Chicken Run (2000), streaming on Netflix

A bunch of claymation chickens try to avoid being eaten. It’s been years since I’ve watched it, and I’m a little woozy from all the medicine I’m on, but this movie slaps. I remember being really stoked as a kid when two of the chickens started a relationship.

Seven: The Great North (2021-hopefully forever), streaming on Hulu

It’s like “Bob’s Burgers,” but in Alaska, so you can wrap yourself in blankets and drink warm drinks while you watch this. The Great North is about the Tobin family, led by single dad Beef Tobin, a fisherman (and teensy bit of a survivalist) who loves Alaska almost as much as his family.

Eight: Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986), streaming on Max

This movie is a great watch for a lot of reasons, but at the moment, I think I want to watch that scene where Sheeta makes stew for everyone.

Nine: The Librarians (2014-2018), streaming on Amazon Prime

Full disclosure: this is not my recommendation, but is made on behalf of my friend, who says she’s now watched this show four times in a row. It’s also been on my list (mostly because Number One from Strange New Worlds stars in it), so maybe I’ll use my sickness as an opportunity to watch it.

Ten: Amélie (2001), available to rent

I wanted to recommend several movies from this director, but then I realized some of you may not have seen “Amelie.” I’m not the first person to like this movie; plenty of blogs online will tell you why this is a masterpiece. When I watched this movie, every time I hoped something would happen, it did. It’s a movie for people who want to see wishes fulfilled.

You’ll probably feel better once you’ve watched all of this content. In the meantime, wrap yourself up in a blanket, don’t pretend you’re too good for Nyquil, and get some rest. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll get to quarantine yourself all through Thanksgiving weekend.

  1. – I’m waiting for James McAvoy to notice me
    – Chicken Run was always in rotation at daycare
    – I like how his name is Beef Tobin but he is not a cattle herder but a fisherman…
