The 10 Weird and Wonderful Movies We Need to See Before the End of 2023

In 2022 I was on a time crunch, so I wrote a short blurb about how much I was looking forward to watching the Ukranian Film “Mavka: The Forest Song.” Sadly, Mavka did not debut in 2022, and last I checked, it won’t be released in the US until August 2023. Thus, “Mavka: The Forest Song” is now my most highly anticipated movie of 2023.

In the spirit of Mavka’s upcoming release, I’ve assembled a list below of all the movies I’m very excited about (or at least intrigued by).

Whenever I assemble a list, I do my best to avoid sharing obvious blockbusters. However, sometimes they slip in, either because they’re just that good, or because they’re illustrating a point I’m making. For example, if I’m assembling a list of incredible science fiction romances, am I just supposed to pretend that “Wall-E” doesn’t exist, just because it’s a wildly popular Pixar movie?

I’m not a monster, y’all. I have some decency.

Joy Ride

What I Want to See: Some kind of reference to “The Orville” because that’s low-key one of my favorite shows. If that sounds unrelated, it’s not! The screenplay was written in part by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, who’s one of the writers for “The Orville” and “Family Guy”!

Theater Camp

What I Want to See: I want to see Jimmy Tatro’s character remain clueless and overwhelmed for the entire movie.

Jules

What I Want to See: Does Jules ever eat anything aside from apples? And even though the main character refers to Jules as a “he,” what is Jules’ story, and how does “he” really identify?

If this movie turns out to be a science fiction romance in addition to a comedy, then I’m going to scream.

Puppy Love

What I Want to See: A crapton of puppies.

This movie references “Lady and the Tramp,” but I couldn’t help but think of “101 Dalmatians.” Do you think the dogs have conspired to bring their owners together, kind of like Pongo and Perdita?

Love at First Sight

What I Want to See: An ending more interesting than the book. I watched this trailer the other day, thought it looked cute, looked it up, and saw that I’d read the book back in 2013, and gave it 3 stars. I honestly can’t remember what happened.

(Although, in my defense, I remember I read this book the same day I watched “The Terminator” for the first time, and that movie was so mind-blowingly romantic that I couldn’t focus on anything else)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

What I Want to See: If the characters reference a location then I want to see that location. So far I’ve read the movie was filmed in Athens and Corfu, so the story better be set in Athens and Corfu. I’ll be taking off points for every low-hanging joke about Mykonos.

As a Greek person, even if this movie is utter garbage, then I’m still morally required to get a ticket, so here’s to hoping it’s better than the sequel and maybe even as good as the first one.

October 2023

Priscilla

What I Want to See: Mostly I’m just curious about the deviations between this movie and Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.”

November 2023

Dune: Part 2

What I Want to See: It’s more like “What I Want to Hear” because as much as I enjoyed the first part of this movie, when I saw it in theatres, the sound mixing was so off I could barely hear the characters talk. If I’m listening to the “Litany Against Fear” then I want to hear it.

WONKA

What I Want to See: The trailer shows an Oompa Loompa, which is cool, but I’m curious if the movie will address how Willy Wonka pays his Oompa Loompas. In the original book, it’s heavily implied that he pays them in cocoa beans, which feels very much like a strange form of slavery.

So friends, that’s my list of movies for now. What’s on your must-see list?

  1. Because I’m a Timothe Chalamet fan sometimes (it’s like 60:40), Dune Part 2 and Willy Wonka. I’m surprised they are doing another Elvis movie so soon.
Priscilla also has had bad press lately so not sure if that will impact sales/box office.
